Civilopedia

Herrn Unterbergs Strategie

The Ashen Veil is often one of the last religions to be founded in most games, and one of the most deadly when used properly.

Any leader that favors summoning will enjoy the Ashen Veil. You no longer need to deal with clumsy Adepts or mana nodes in order to get summon spells, as Ritualists start with some of the better summons and a faster XP growth rate (thanks to Unholy Taint) right off the assembly line, and these spells only become more powerful as they upgrade to Inquisitors or High Priests.

However, since the Veil only yields science bonuses from it's Holy Shrine (rather than gold as other religions receive), beelining to it and relying on it to support your economy is not a good idea (especially since it's a late-game religion). Rather, you should adopt the Veil only once your economy is strong enough to survive without the extra gold. A previous religion, especially the Runes of Kilmorph, can be helpful in making up the lost gold. If you can, plot the Crown of Akharien in the same city as the Stigmata to bolster the science effect.

Another popular strategy is to take High Priests or Inquisitors with Body III (acquired from either the Runes or Overlords) and use them to create an army of flesh golems for later use when following the Ashen Veil. This can be an effective way to recycle those pesky religious heroes (like Bambur or Hemah) which would normally abandon you upon switching to the Veil, but will follow you religiously once golem-ized (pun intended). Once you have your golem-makers, you can merge Ritualists with sorcery-wielding units like Mages or Archmages to create golems with access to all 3 branches of magic. Just be sure you have all the promotions you need beforehand; flesh golems, like their inorganic counterparts, can't gain promotions.

Another aspect of the Veil is the ability to sacrifice your own units for research with a Demon's Altar. This works in tandem with the Soul Forge, so if you have it and an altar in the same city, you can sacrifice a high-XP unit for a lot of production and research all in one shot. If you use this production to build more units that gain XP quickly (like Ritualists or Vampires, if you're playing the Calabim), you can keep this cycle going in a feedback loop that can quickly give you a massive edge in technology.

Rushing - by Daladinn

I can get Mysticism to finish at a point where Education would require 50 more beakers. I build both the Elder Council and the Pagan Temple in that order (typically I can finish the Elder Council before I could otherwise finish Education). This nets me 5 extra beakers right off the bat per turn (2 from Elder Council, 3 from Sage). Then I set another as a Priest when I finish the Pagan Temple. This grants me 6+ (depending on Civilization tactically). So in a quick game I am 12 turns from a great person. I am researching Knowledge of the Ether. If I pop a Great Sage I save it for Corruption of Spirit, but if I pop a Great Prophet I burn it for Philosophy. Then move on the path as described.

This is a way to race for The Ashen Veil; the other alternative is to hold on Knowledge of the Ether until you get Exploration and/or Education , then you can pop a Great Sage for Knowledge of the Ether if you desire.

~Mr.Underhill: Writing and Knowledge of the Ether cost the same in beakers, so it's possible -assuming no one else has Writing already- to research Writing instead of KotE and use the free Sage to pick up KotE on the backside literally for free (if you have Mysticism). From there you can start building libraries and assigning more sages to rush the Veil even faster.

Geshichten

Dorian

My name is Dorian and there was a time that I loved the veil above all.

Green sap drips down my leg, that boil must have popped finally, I can't even feel anymore, a whip cracks down on me and my feet drag me forwards. This is my reward.

I try to protest but the only things I can force out of these lips are weak grunts.

The whip cracks again. This is my reward.

It takes a pitiful creature to even want immortality.

I look next to me, to the other men in my unit, men like me, men who had been faithful to the veil, who had loved it above all. The trick is to look into the eyes, but even that is prone to leave you believing they aren't thinking. People assume that because we can't talk anymore we can't think either, and how I wish that were so. If my mind were sedated then this would not be nearly so much like hell. I can see it in a few of their eyes as they lumber forwards with me. They're naked, just like me, and they don't have so much as a stick to attack the enemy with. Any other soldier in any other unit would complain, but this is our reward, immortality.

Not that we can't be killed, just that we can't die, I've seen my share of us throw themselves on the spears of the Order rather than continue this existence, but I didn't get here because I wasn't afraid to die. I know what is waiting for me on the other side of death and I am more than happy to postpone that eternity even if it means going into combat naked with boils popping that I can no longer feel dripping green sap down my leg. This is my reward.

My name is Dorian and there was a time that I loved the veil above all.

It would be easy to blame the other priests, the others who stood there with me making bargains for power. I didn't regret those bargains then and I won't regret them now, but if I can cheat death, of course I will.

But now I love life more than the veil. I won't make any needless sacrifices and I intend to survive for as long as I can, I've been tapping into my lost magics and melding them, working with them. Trying to find a way around the fact that I cannot chant incantations, trying to find a way to heal myself through sheer force of will, to regain it all, my power and my form. Then I will become a powerful warrior for the veil again.

Another boil pops and green sap bleeds down my back, bits of my finger fall apart and to the ground.

The whip cracks again over this army of corpses.

My name is Dorian and there was a time that I loved the veil above all.

This is my reward.
